AN elite police officer learning to teach colleagues how to handle the force's new semi-automatic pistol shot himself while reholstering it.
The 30-year-old water police officer fired a shot into his thigh at the Glen Waverley training academy yesterday, and had to be admitted to hospital.
Victoria Police confirmed the leading senior constable, who has not been named, was on the third day of a 10-day course in training other members in how to use the semi-automatic Smith & Wesson pistol.
An insider told the Herald Sun the officer, who is experienced with guns, did not apply the safety catch and kept his finger on the trigger while reholstering.
