Chicago police officer dies in robbery attempt
An off-duty Chicago police officer just back from Iraq was shot and killed after three people approached him at his parents' home on the South Side Wednesday night and tried to steal his new motorcycle, authorities said.
The officer's father, a retired Chicago police sergeant, fired back at the robbers, sources said. One of the robbers was killed and another was critically wounded, authorities said. The third fled in a maroon Nissan Maxima.
The officer was identified as Thomas Wortham IV, whose most recent address was his parents home near 85th Street and King Drive, where he was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The dead suspect was identified as Brian Floyd, 20, of the 3700 block of South Wentworth Avenue.
